2013 U19 All-Star Game

was proud to once again to see how many Knights played in the All Star Game, 21 players from our 2011 and 2013 appeared, unfortunatley Lewis Curtis had already left for Australia and Toby Hawksley picked up an injury

I have attached the link below to the ELA Article on the game, watch out for video highlights on the ELA website.

It was another great one goal game as it was in 2012.

The Eastern All-Stars win their second annual U19 All-Star game in another thrilling game at Timperley Lacrosse Club. The two evenly matched teams produced an exciting end-to-end game, and an excellent exhibition of the games up and coming talent.

The West All-Stars scored the games first goal thanks to a great individual effort from Tim Collins. Collins also had an excellent game at the face-off X winning 8 from 19 contested and drawing East’s LSM Ben Ready to contain his forward play. East’s second goal came in transition when LSM Will Alsop found Dan Watson open on the crease.

Poynton Lacrosse Club were well represented on the Eastern All-Star team, fresh from their U19 A League victory. Ciaran Johnson and Alex Russell represented their club with distinction and scored the opening two goals to even the game at the end of the first quarter. Q1(2-2) The East piled on the pressure in the second quarter and their hard work paid-off with a great solo effort from Scott Dagnanleach putting the East into the lead. The score line would have been extended further if it were not for Heaton Mersey’s Elliot Hurry who had an excellent game between the pipes for the Western All-Stars making some crucial saves. Q2(2-3) Cameron Parks lead the West’s comeback in the third scoring two great goals. Parks had an excellent game on both sides of the field for the West and was instrumental in his team’s comeback. The West’s Will Hardy also looked impressive coming out of midfield. His size and lightening split dodge drew allot of attention from the East defence and his hard work paid off with the West’s fifth goal.

Rochdale’s Rhys Fallows lead the talented East offence, possessing good size and stick skills, his aggressive play and ability to get open allowed him to finish as the games top scorer with three goals. Fallows scored two of his three in the third to even up the score ahead of the final period. Q3(5-5)

The fourth quarter delivered a nail-biting ending to an enjoyable game with both goalies producing a string of great saves to keep their teams in contention. The stalemate was broken by the West with a goal from Tim Nichol, it was soon followed by a great low-to-low effort from Scott Dagnanleach to equalize the game.
Sheffield’s Will Hardy soon put the West back in the lead with another alley dodge and outside shot. Rhys Fallows rounded off his game with his third and final goal taking the score back to evens.

The winner came from Poynton’s Josh Noel who scored in the dying moments of the game to win it for the East. Q4(8-7) North West Lacrosse Association would like to thank the Refereeing staff, Dom Fitzgerald at McLellan Clothing Ltd for providing the shirts worn by both squads and Timperley Lacrosse Club for hosting the game.

Knights - Billy Kershaw in MGS Magazine!

KNIGHTS 2015 - Billy Kershaw!

http://mgs.org/for-parents/news/latest/916-english-knight-billy-prepares-for-usa

South Manchester Reporter
September 2013

Local boy Billy Kershaw is preparing for the biggest lacrosse games of his life, as he joins England’s finest schoolboy players as they prepare to take on some of the best American high school teams.

Billy Kershaw (14), who lives in Didsbury and is a student at The Manchester Grammar School, was one of just five attackers selected to join the Elite English Knights team as they train for the next two years to take part in the Bison Brawl and the Gait Cup at Gettysburg University in Philadelphia.

As Billy explained: “Fifty of us took part in the trials with 23 selected to join the team. Competition for a place was tough as we were competing against the best players in the country including some from the American School TASIS, who take their lacrosse really seriously, but I’m delighted to have secured mine and can’t wait to go!”

Billy started playing lacrosse when he was just eight years old after he and his mum visited the Didsbury Festival and saw a leaflet about it.

He has since done his own research, delving deep into the sport’s roots: “I completely immersed myself into the research of my new favourite sport. I found out so many interesting facts; it’s the fastest growing sport in America and was actually originally founded by Native Americans more than 3,000 years ago. I knew I had to be a part of that,” added Billy.

Billy has also earned a place on the England Academy’s U15s team as well as being a longstanding member of Manchester Waconians – the only lacrosse club in the city of Manchester which is now more than 100 years old. As well as preparing for his trip across the Atlantic he is also preparing to play with Lancashire U16s in the hotly anticipated East vs West All Stars where the county takes on Cheshire.

Concluded MGS Director of Sport Mark Walmsley: “I am delighted to see one of our students thrive in a sport that he clearly loves.”

Knights Try-Outs

Thanks to Handcartmedia.com (Jamie Hardie) for the Banners!

We held the first Knights Lacrosse try outs on Sunday the 8th September, it was attended by 50 of England's brightest Lacrosse talent coming from Manchester, Sheffield and the London area. For past tours the team has been selected by invite only but as the program gets bigger and more popular we want to open up the opportunity to as many players as possible from all over Britain.

It was a very successful day and the sun was shining, the first part of the try out included a
warm up, footwork and sprint tests, moving on to positional and integrated testing and finishing with 3 games.

My brave heart award of the day goes to Nathan Edwards (above), fearless kid with great skills! see me for your free Knights Snap Back cap!

I was proud to see the talent on show and all the players put in so much effort over the 4 hours, the selection of the team will be out soon and the list will be posted on this site!

Thank you to all the players and parents that attended from everyone at Knights.

A big thank you to Simon & Susan Smith, Lynne Harvey-Burnam & Alison Cara and to all the coaches.

A huge thank you to Wilmslow for their hospitality and hosting the event!

Knights @ Wilmslow mini Tournament - 11/08/13

The Knights where invited to play in the Wilmslow Mini Tournament involving Wilmslow 1st
team (Premier 1), Norbury and Stoke. All adult teams.

We had a lot of players away on Holiday or attending England Practice, however we still had a great group of talented players and also called up Ryan Sweetman (Brooklands & England U19), Matt Boyd (Cheadle & England U19) and also Coach Rowlinson played in the Norbury game.

We played Wilmslow 1st team first in a very competitive game against an experienced 1st team.
Our Defense started well and limited their chances in the first half, we had limited possessions to begin with but still had some chances but couldn't finish inside!

Tim Collins was matched up against Mike Jordan (not that one) who is a very strong face-off man and after a few possessions Tim started to work him out, by using his speed and skill we began to win possession and this gave us a chance to get back into the game!

Boyd and Sweetman where the engine room in Midfield and really started to step up and create for us!

Goals from Ben Smith, Steve Ewing 2, Ryan Sweetman got us back into the game and we drew level later in the 4th Quarter with 2 goals from Alex Russell.

LSM Josh Turner was his usual self and was all over the field, stripping the ball and carrying up field.

Elliott Hurry made some special saves in the second half and kept it very close.

It was great to see Tig and Joe Baythorpe back playing after their Injuries in the US, they both looked back to their best and you could tell they where enjoying being out there again!

The game finished 6-6, I was very proud of the high level of play shown from the Knights, the team consisted of players from our tour in 2013 and 4 from 2011, we where playing a team that plays in the Premier Division in the UK every week. The players have shown great improvement and had confidence in their own ability!

23 Men!

We then played Norbury in the second game and where too much for them to handle, we won the game by at least 6 goals and looked very impressive!

Goals from Steve Ewing 6, Alex Russell, Greg Rowlinson and a great outside rip from Joe Baythorpe.

Norbury looked frustrated at the end of the game and took a cheap shot running through Steve Ewings pick on the crease, it should have resulted in a penalty and did not go along with the Friendly nature of the tournament!

The Knights really enjoyed getting back together and would like to thank Wilmslow for inviting us to the Tournament.

Wrap Up - by The Unknown Knight

The Bison Brawl

After competing in the Gait Cup, we jumped on a classic yellow school bus that would take us to the second half of the trip – The Bison Brawl. Based at the division 1 Bucknell University, it had great facilities with the air-conditioned rooms that the players had been waiting for. As soon as we arrived, the whole team flooded onto the main pitch in the stadium for a chuck-around. After this we headed to the rooms to prepare for the three games that followed the next day.

Day 1 of the tournament was full of highs and lows. We started the day of playing a team called Webster Thomas, a mediocre team who should have been beaten. Overall we played like we were half-asleep; there was a lack of communication in defence, which was apparent due to there being hardly any co-operation between players. With the defence not playing like a unit and the offence posing no real threat and not working for each other. We lost a game that we shouldn’t have and disappointed not only Coach Scott but also each other and ourselves.

After the game, we discussed as a team that we would never play how we did again, and talked about the things that weren’t there that should have been; such as working for each other and decision-making on the pitch. 23 Men. 1 Team.

The second game of the day was promised to be an intense one. Every player was determined to make coach proud and represent solid English lacrosse. The defence talked as much as possible and the attack didn’t take one break. The team played with fire in the belly and a cool mind. It was noticeable the difference, there were less turnovers, more team-goals scored, and less goals from the opposition. The game ended in a draw, this then meant that a “brave heart” ending was needed in which one player and one goalie from both teams were the only players on the pitch. Unfortunately Ben Reddy lost the face-off after a great effort during the game, and the opposition scored and won. Despite this so-called loss, the team took a positive look on the game and how we had performed.

The final game of the day was against the future Bucknell players. The team went in to the game relaxed as win or lose, the objective was to have fun and enjoy a good game of lacrosse between England’s finest youth players, and Bucknell University’s future competitive squad. We witnessed their lightning speed in defence, but also managed to put a couple in the back of the opposition’s goal. Overall, the game was enjoyable and we competed with them. From this game we learnt that with a relaxed team mentality, we could perform better than expected. Three more games lay ahead the next day.

Day two of the Bison Brawl contained three games against the ‘Shamrocks’ team, another Webster Schroeder and a team from Fairport.

We had a fantastic game against the so-called Shamrocks who were leading the tournament at this point. In the first half Will Baxter made some amazing saves and the defence cleared perfectly. These defensive efforts continued until the end of the game as Elliot Hurry went in goal and also made some vital saves. The importance of maintaining a solid defence was highlighted by the coaches with the intention of giving the offence more opportunities to put it in the back of the net against the Shamrocks goalie. With a driving goal from Alex Winton, quick-stick goal from Jake Howarth, a well-executed split dodge and then goal from Matt Rowarth we were even in the late stages of the game. The tension was high with little time left in the game and both teams attempting to score a winning goal. The defence avoided conceding and the ball went up field and then fed into Steve Ewing who was cutting in front of the goal. Great feed, and then a great inside finish by Steve. The game came to a close with celebrations from every player. A game that will never be forgotten against the team who went on to win the tournament.

The game against Fairport was an enjoyable one, despite the ambiguous decisions by the refs that always seemed to go the opposition’s way. Regardless, we played against a competitive side that were a pleasure to play with and talk to after the match. The defence continued being a solid unit at the back whilst the offence kept working for each other to create great scoring opportunities. A great goal from Steve Ewing was disallowed after he managed to put it in the back of the net after being pushed in the back by a defender. For some reason the refs allowed an almost identical goal from the other team. This sparked outrage on the bench, as Coach Scott was having none of it. Steve managed to cut inside and get past multiple defenders to score again however. The game ended 5-3 to Fairport.

We lost 7-4 to the Webster Schroeder with goals from Steve Ewing, Jake Howarth, Alex Russell, and Alex Winton. However this was another team that we could have beaten. Captain Steve continuing his driving in from the wing technique in order to keep the goals coming. The players seemed tired in this match, but nevertheless competed with the American competition.

The evening of the second day was when the All-star game was to take place. The Knights had done well and managed to have four players selected. Ciaran Johnson who had worked harder than anyone else in every game in the tournament to clear the ball up field, Elliott Condren who was always a strong offensive threat, and both the Goalies who had played brilliantly making important saves in every game. In the game Will Baxter managed to impress with multiple saves and an 80yrd run up the pitch to clear the ball. Elliott Hurry saved shots for the other team also. The middies seemed to enjoy the game also as it was a good display of the talent we were competing with. The players made the whole team proud.

The next morning, we had a quarterfinal match against Westfield, the team we had drawn/lost to on ‘Braveheart’. Despite a lack of enthusiasm by turning up at the pitch without a warm-up, the team knew that this could be their last game together so played to enjoy it. Tim Nicol scored a skilful bounce shot to start of the goals. For the whole of the tournament and especially in this game, Tim Collins was a hero on face-off, assisted by LSM Grady on the ground ball battle in the middle. The defence played physical and looked strong together. The opposition trash talked a lot but we showed them who were tougher by forcing turnovers and winning ground ball battles. After our early lead they came back to win the game from good play and not from our errors. Alex Russell scored a sweet dunk shot over the goalie, and Jose Cara blasted one into the bottom corner of the goal on a man-up opportunity. We put in a solid performance but this was the end of our tour.

An exhausted team headed to the airport with grins on their faces from enjoying the experience. Strong friendships were made and a great team returned home. We couldn’t have done any of it, or improved as much as we did without all the coaches and especially Coach Scott Weddell. An experience never to be forgotten.

Once a Knight, Always a Knight!

Homeward bound!

Coming Home!

We packed up at Bucknell and got ready to come home, we packed up the Bus - a big thank to Klein transportation and out driver Mike! and Ashley at Klein for making it all work!

We stopped off on the way home at Lax Unlimited, Ardmore, PA to so the lads could off-load some US dollars and that they did, a huge thanks to  it is a beautiful area and home to Lacrosse powerhouse Haverford High School and Villanova Wildcats! This is easily the best Lax Unlimited I have been to, was well stocked and the people working their where knowledge-able and very helpful!

We reached the airport and waved farewell to Jake Howarth and checked in for our flight!

We arrived home on time to Manchester Airport by the parents and friends!

We found out later that Joe Harris had actually broken his wrist and not sprained it as first though, what a tough kid!

Third Day - vs Westfield

We woke up at 7 for an 8 o'clock game the boys looked tired after a busy 10 days, we had little time and didn't turn up until 5 mins before the game. I wasn't very happy but didn't rant at the boys and let them take responsibility for the game themselves the lads know what they are doing and they did a great job. Tim Nicol received a feed to shoot a high bouncer into the top of the net he's a great middie and an intelligent player that will go far in this game.

Grady Jackson-Fayle and Tim Collins did a great job and we went two up with a goals from Alex Russell who is an all star caliber player in my eyes and has been clutch in this tournament.

Captain fantastic Steve Ewing then scored.

The Westfield team aren't the nicest of teams talking trash and got a lot of penalties but we went into half time level, they came back into the game from good play and not from our errors.

Our Defence played solid and collapsed well taking the ball away and playing physical.

In the second half Jose Cara scored on man up with a great high to low shot and ran to the box with a huge grin!

Alex Russell scored again on a jump shot around the post!

We put in a solid performance and competed but lost the game 7-5!

I've brought home 23 men!

Second Day - All Star Game

We could have had Russell, Ewing, Dags, Howarth, Condren, Johnson, Winton, Collins, Jackson-Fayle, Hurry or Baxter on this team.

Chosen where Condren, Baxter, Hurry and Johnson.

It was amazing to have two goalkeepers from same team In all star game.

They did us proud!
